DC & AC Power Systems for the Oil & Gas Industry
Upstream (exploration and production), midstream (transport of crude oil, natural gas and gas liquid) and downstream (refineries, petrochemical plants, petroleum products distributors and natural gas distributors) are critical 24/7 processes. They have continuous control processes which cannot afford to fail.
The OIL&GAS critical processes listed below require a reliable supply of power with backup:
- Reticulation of gas
- Well intervention and reservoir evaluation.
- Water treatment plants
- Pumping stations
- Pipeline compressors
- Production optimization systems
- Data processing, SCADA systems (Oil & Gas operations are often located at remote areas and in harsh environments therefore need a stable and controllable communication system)
- DCS (distributed control systems)
- Electrical Substations onshore and offshore.
Helios Power Solutions provides a comprehensive portfolio of DC Power Systems (Quality Power Supply, Battery Charging Systems, Inverters, DC-DC Converters, Battery monitoring systems, etc.) , Power Quality Solutions (controlling sags and unregulated voltage issues), AC UPS and surge protection devices.
Protection and safe operation of the critical processes mentioned above are possible when you have the proper components or devices aligned with the overall system’s features.
Helios Power Solutions’ experienced technical staff will design a custom made, fit for purpose power solution to meet the varied and demanding requirements of the oil and gas industries.

Downstream Application – Refining New Zealand
Failure of DC control power can mean fault detection devices do not operate, breakers are unable to trip, and local and remote monitoring becomes inoperable.
Refinery New Zealand trusted Helios Power Solutions to Design and Manufacture the auxiliary DC control power system, made up of Battery Charger (rectifiers with internal over-temperature protection), distribution, and comprehensive system controller. This guaranteed a reliable and continuous operation of its 33kV substation.

CAB296 is a 110VDC 4.8kW battery charging system utilizing three 1.6kW, convection cooled, hot swappable rectifiers and a comprehensive VIDI system controller.
The system consists of mains input protection, an Opus battery charger, MCCB battery and load protection, and a decoupling diode. CAB296 is housed in a 45U 600mm x 600mm 19” floor mount cabinet with plinth.
The rectifiers communicate via CanBus with the VIDI system controller which is the advanced monitoring and control device for OPUS DC power systems.
The Opus C110-8.0R 12U battery charger consists of three IEMRC 110-1600 convection cooled rectifiers, an IEVIDI+I/O system controller and user interface control panel.
The IEVIDI+I/O is used to configure, control and monitor the Opus system and associated components. It also provides the user interface and monitoring via the UIF control panel, MODBUS or SNMP communications and relay outputs and inputs.
Helios Power Solutions designed the solution specifically to meet the needs of the site, and produced a turn key system with factory approved testing and full documentation. For refinery, electrical engineers it was a plug and play process to integrate into the substation.
